30 Avenue Montaigne
Enter the heart of 30 Avenue Montaigne, this “packed little beehive” where the Christian Dior legend was born 75 years ago!
“A packed little beehive, that’s what my house was when I presented my first collection,” Christian Dior recalled in 1956.
Countless people worked on each collection. The Grand Staircase was the backbone of the couture house. A busy thoroughfare linking all the floors, it also provided a marvelous backdrop for photographs.
“From the moment it opened, the press and then the buyers packed into my salons. The crowds forced us to enlarge the landing and to get rid of a charming old elevator. There was still not enough room, so the invaders spilled out onto the staircase, and people sat on the steps in order of precedence, like in an amphitheater.”
When the collections were shown, the presentation salons proved too small to hold all the guests, who spilled out into the landing and the steps of the staircase that led to the next floor.
